SEATTLE ITEC 2007

The 2007 Seattle ITEC show is nearly upon us. This year, the show will be held at the Qwest Field Event Center on June 20—21. (It’s hard to miss...just look for the football stadium!) And once you get there, it will be just as hard to miss the Moose Logic team.

Team Moose Racing

Once again, Team Moose Racing will be bringing lovely Rita, our 2002 Corvette, to be the centerpiece of our exhibit area. If you missed your chance to get your picture taken in the car last year (or just want another one taken this year), our Web Designer / Graphic Artist / Photographer Jeff will be happy to accommodate you.

Rita at the 2006 ITEC.

Rita - Team Moose Racing And while you’re there, you can look at some very cool technology as well, including:

XenSource—A simple, powerful virtualization platform that’s only $750 per two-socket license.

Small Business Server 2003 R2—The perfect “first server” for a growing business, SBS 2003 can serve as the foundation of a scalable, flexible network infrastructure. Need an easy way to work from home? No problem. Want to move away from the “shared office folder,” stop playing the “who’s got the latest version of the document?” game, and move toward intuitive document management? No problem.

BioPassword—Strong authentication that requires no tokens or smart cards, and no change in user behavior. If you’re from Missouri, and need to see it to believe it, come see it here. We’ll make a believer out of you.

Citrix Presentation Server v4.5—The latest generation of Citrix’s flagship product now supports Application Streaming to desktops. You may never have to explicitly install an application on a PC workstation again! Plus the new Desktop Broker feature gives you the flexibility to publish a desktop that, depending on user and group membership, may be delivered from the Presentation Server, or may connect you to a PC running on a virtual platform such as a XenSource server, or may connect you to a blade PC.

Catch the vision of the complete Citrix Application Delivery Infrastructure—six different areas within a corporate network where Citrix can bring value to the task of delivering applications to users.

Windows Vista—Take a test drive of Microsoft’s new flagship desktop Operating System. Check out the advanced security features, integrated search capabilities, and the cool “Aero” interface.

Team Moose Racing Office 2007—Ever spend way too much time looking for an email message that you know you sent (or received)? Wait until you see the search function that’s built into Outlook 2007! And did you know that the new Word and Excel file formats can use up to 40% less disk space compared to the space required to store the same file in the Office 2003 format? How about the ability to quickly and easily export a file as a PDF? And the collaboration features are unparalleled. Come get a hands-on look at the latest Office Suite—you may find that there really are good reasons to consider an upgrade!

Register Today—Just go to http://www.goitec.com, click on “Seattle,” and click on “Registration.” Use the VIP Passcode “TEAVIP.” Then just look for Rita!

Confused With All The Hype Surrounding VoIP? This Should Clear Things Up...

VoIP (or Voice over Internet Protocol) is a way of routing your telephone calls over the Internet instead of using standard telephone lines.

Currently, the biggest reason people are switching to VoIP is to save money. In almost every case, VoIP service is considerably cheaper than traditional phone service. Most providers will allow you to make unlimited calls anywhere in the US and Canada for one low, flat rate, and international calls for a low per minute rate. For companies who make a lot of long-distance calls to customers or to other office locations, this can be a considerable cost savings.

Confused about VoIP? Just like all other phone services, VoIP providers can offer voice mail, caller ID, and 3-way calling, but prices and features will vary with different providers so make sure you shop around. And some VoIP providers will allow you to check your voice mail over the Internet; something not offered by traditional phone service.

So what are the downsides to VoIP? Some providers—notably Skype— may require you to purchase special phones to use with their service. Although VoIP providers promote the fact that you can keep your existing phone number, it may be a slow and difficult process for a VoIP provider to make the transfer. If you are lucky, it will only take a couple of days; but in many cases it can take weeks, a month or sometimes even longer.

You will also need an Internet connection with a minimum of 128K upstream speed in order to get acceptable call quality. Before switching to VoIP, be sure to test your Internet connection for not only up-speed, but also for packet loss, latency and other factors that can negatively impact call quality (www.testyourvoip.com). And remember that DSL is a half-duplex technology, meaning that it can’t transmit in both directions simultaneously. That can lead to some odd behavior when both parties are trying to talk. For that reason, we really don’t recommend DSL for business VoIP. And using a VoIP service for a fax machine can cause transmission errors.

Even if you have a fast upstream connection, your call quality can suffer if you start uploading or downloading big files or sending big e-mail attachments because your VoIP traffic has to compete with those applications—unless you invest in some method of “QoS,” or Quality of Service technology to insure that voice packets get priority treatment.

“My mother is such a lousy cook that Thanksgiving at her house is a time of mourning.” - Rita Rudner

Troubleshooting Your iPod

Seems like everyone has an iPod these days. And why not? They’re a great (skip-free) way to listen to music when you workout, an easy way to listen to audio books, and they give you access to radio Podcasts for free. Plus you have complete control over your playlists.

But, they aren’t without their share of problems. It’s not uncommon for an iPod to suddenly stop working or have problems. When this happens, Apple recommends that you do three things:

Start by resetting your iPod. First, toggle the hold switch by sliding it to hold and then off again. Then simultaneously hold the “Menu” and “Select” buttons until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

If that doesn’t help, you’ll need to reinstall an updated version of the iTunes and iPod software to your computer. This can be accessed through Apple’s web site, www.apple.com. Then connect your iPod to the computer and sync it. If that still doesn’t fix the problem, you’ll need to run the iPod Updater, which again, can be downloaded from Apple's web site.

Unfortunately, the iPod Updater will erase everything that is on your iPod, so make certain you’ve backed up your music and playlists before doing this. Then connect your iPod to your computer and wait for iTunes to open. Then click Start - All Programs - iPod. Click the iPod Updater listing with the most recent date.

When the iPod Updater opens, simply follow the on-screen instructions. The upgrade may take some time to complete. Once you've updated the iPod, sync it with iTunes again to restore your music and playlists.

If that still doesn’t fix the problem, you’ll have to take your iPod to an Apple store or ship it back for repair. Again, make sure you back up your music files. Apple will NOT replace music that is lost, even if it WAS a problem with the iPod that caused it in the first place.
